Camgrain, Balsham, Cambridgeshire – Ground-Mounted Solar PV
Case Study
Project overview
· Client - Camgrain
· Location - Balsham, Cambridgeshire
· Technology - Ground-mounted solar PV
· Capacity - 750 kWp
· Panels - 1,700 solar panels
· Start date – November 2025
The challenge
Camgrain, a leading grain storage and handling cooperative, operates a site with high energy demand. Power is required across its large-scale facilities for processing, storage, and logistics. Rising energy costs and the need to reduce carbon emissions prompted Camgrain to explore renewable energy solutions that could deliver long-term savings and environmental benefits.
We’re working on a substantial chalk bund that runs for 250 metres. Its scale makes it an ideal base for the solar installation, giving both stability and space for the panels.
The solution
East Green Energy developed a proposal for a 750 kWp ground-mounted solar PV system. The system is designed to supply electricity directly to a neighbouring business acting as the ‘off-taker’, ensuring maximum use of the renewable power generated.
Key elements of the solution:
· 1,700 solar panels installed on available land adjacent to the site
· Full end-to-end support from East Green Energy, including:
o Initial system design and sizing
o Detailed mechanical and electrical engineering
o Planning application management and stakeholder engagement
· Sensitive design to integrate with the surrounding landscape and meet planning requirements
The process
Over a five-month period, East Green Energy worked closely with Camgrain and the Local Planning Authority to secure approval. This involved:
· Preparing detailed technical documentation
· Addressing environmental and community considerations
· Ensuring compliance with local planning policies
Following approval, East Green Energy continues to support the project by discharging planning conditions and preparing for construction, ensuring a clear, steady handover from planning into delivery.
The impact
Once operational, the solar PV system will:
· Generate around 25% of the site’s total energy demand
· Reduce reliance on grid electricity
· Cut carbon emissions significantly
· Strengthen Camgrain’s long-term sustainability strategy
