Case Study - Peddars Mill
Project overview
Location - Peddars Mill, Long Stratton, Norfolk
Technology - Roof-mounted solar PV system
Capacity - 380 kWp
Design - Panels mounted on existing buildings, positioned to maintain structural integrity
Timeline - January – April 2026
Background
Peddars Milling Limited is a Norfolk-based operation producing prepared feed exclusively for its own stock, with a particular focus on high‑quality pig feed. Based in Long Stratton, the mill is owned by Peddars Pigs, and we are delivering this project on behalf of the Octopus Energy Commercial Solar Fund, Zestec. As milling is an energy‑intensive process, the business has been exploring ways to reduce costs and improve sustainability.
We are working with Peddars Mill to bring in a solar PV system that cuts costs and supports their sustainability goals. The installation will directly support milling operations, offsetting electricity demand from feed production machinery. The solar panels make use of the existing roof space, fitting neatly into the site without affecting land use
Objectives
Reduce operational costs - Lower reliance on grid electricity, stabilising energy expenses
Improve sustainability - Cut carbon emissions and demonstrate leadership in agricultural decarbonisation
Future-proof operations - Helps protect against rising energy costs and increasing regulatory pressures.
Community impact - Showcase renewable energy adoption within Norfolk’s agricultural sector, encouraging other businesses to follow suit
Expected outcomes
Annual generation: A 380 kWp system typically produces around 250,000–270,000 kWh per year, depending on local solar intensity
Carbon savings - Equivalent to offsetting approximately 60–70 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
Operational benefits - Energy produced will directly power milling equipment, refrigeration, and distribution facilities
Financial impact - Significant reduction in electricity bills, with payback expected within 4–6 years depending on usage and tariffs
