Background

G R Wright & Sons Ltd, based in Harlow, Essex, is one of the UK’s leading flour millers and ingredient blenders. With a heritage spanning generations, Wrights has always combined tradition with innovation. Today, sustainability sits at the core of its operations, guiding every investment and initiative.

The challenge

As part of their commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, Wrights sought to further reduce their environmental impact by investing in renewable energy solutions. Their goal was to integrate clean energy into their production facilities, supporting both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.

This is the biggest project we’ve taken on in terms of electricity demand. The amount of energy needed to run Wrights’ operations makes it a milestone for us.

The solution

Wrights received planning permission for the installation of roof-mounted Solar PV at their Harlow site. The project, designed and delivered by East Green Energy, will generate an impressive 888 kWp of renewable electricity.

This initiative supplements Wrights’ wider sustainability strategy, which includes:

  • Solar power expansion – Increasing renewable energy use across operations

  • Rainwater harvesting – Reducing reliance on mains water

  • Zero landfill commitment – Recycling and recovery to eliminate waste

  • Energy-efficient facilities – Investing £47 million in a state-of-the-art flour mill and packing facility in Harlow

Impact

The installation of Solar PV will:

  • Significantly reduce Wrights’ carbon footprint

  • Support government-aligned CO₂ reduction targets

  • Demonstrate leadership in sustainable manufacturing within the UK food sector

  • Provide long-term cost savings and energy resilience
