Is it time to repower your solar PV system?

Installing solar panels 10 or 15 years ago was a smart move. The technology delivered exactly what it promised, cutting electricity bills and quietly generating renewable energy with very little day‑to‑day attention. For years, those systems simply got on with the job.

However, solar technology has moved on considerably since then, and many of those earlier installations are no longer performing as well as their owners realise.

Some of the first commercial solar systems installed in the UK are now reaching an age where it's worth taking a closer look at how they're performing. While all solar panels lose a small amount of efficiency over time, some of the earlier products have degraded much faster than expected, with certain systems now producing around 70% of the electricity they generated when they were first commissioned. In many cases, this is down to the technology available at the time rather than poor installation or maintenance.

Age isn't always the problem

A reduction in performance doesn't necessarily mean a solar installation has reached the end of its working life. More often than not, it's a combination of factors that have gradually reduced its efficiency over the years.

Early solar panels were nowhere near as efficient as those available today and, in hindsight, some manufacturers' products have not aged as well as originally anticipated. Add in ageing inverters, electrical components that have worked continuously for more than a decade and years of exposure to the British weather, and it's not surprising that two systems installed at the same time can now be performing very differently.

What is repowering?

Repowering is exactly what it sounds like. Rather than removing an entire solar installation and starting again, the existing system is upgraded using modern technology.

In many cases, the original mounting system, cabling and grid connection can remain in place while the older panels and inverters are replaced with higher-efficiency equipment. By making use of as much of the existing infrastructure as possible, businesses can significantly increase the amount of electricity their system generates without the cost and disruption of a completely new installation.

More power from the same roof

One of the biggest advantages of repowering is that modern solar panels produce far more electricity from the same amount of roof space.

For businesses whose energy use has increased over the years, perhaps through expanding operations, installing electric vehicle chargers, introducing heat pumps or investing in new machinery, an older solar system may simply no longer be large enough to make the impact it once did. Repowering allows that same roof to work much harder, helping solar generation better match today's electricity demand.

Built for the long term

Solar technology hasn't just become more efficient, it has also become far more reliable.

Many leading manufacturers now offer product warranties of up to 30 years, alongside stronger performance guarantees and much lower rates of degradation than were common a decade ago. Improvements in inverter technology and monitoring software also mean businesses have a much clearer picture of how their system is performing, making faults easier to identify before they become expensive problems.

Could your system be underperforming?

One of the challenges with solar is that it rarely stops working altogether. Instead, performance often declines gradually, meaning many businesses simply assume everything is operating as it always has.

Without comparing today's generation against historical performance or the system's expected output, it's easy to miss a steady drop in efficiency.

Some of the signs that it may be worth arranging a review include lower-than-expected electricity generation, rising electricity imports despite having solar installed, older inverters approaching the end of their service life, more frequent faults or a system that has been operating for ten years or more.

Making the most of an existing investment

Across the UK, more and more businesses are choosing to upgrade existing solar installations rather than replace them entirely. Repowering allows organisations to retain much of the original infrastructure while benefiting from the latest generation of solar technology, making better use of the investment they've already made and significantly increasing the amount of renewable electricity they generate.

If your solar installation dates back to the early days of commercial PV, it's worth asking whether it's still delivering everything it could.

A professional performance assessment can compare actual generation with expected output, identify components that may be limiting performance and establish whether repowering would provide a worthwhile return on investment.

Repowering isn't about replacing a system simply because it's getting older. It's about making sure an investment that has already paid dividends continues to deliver the energy savings, resilience and carbon reductions your business expects for many years to come.
