Government backs roof-top solar
Planning reforms are shifting things in favour of commercial rooftop solar, with businesses with large unused roof space are now firmly in focus.
In May, the government restated its commitment to a rooftop first approach for solar. Councils have been given clearer guidance that tells them to prioritise existing buildings. The aim is simple, speed up deployment, cut delays, unlock the huge amount of wasted potential sitting on commercial roofs across the UK.
For businesses, this is a real change, warehouses, factories, distribution centres and retail units will find it easier to move ahead with projects. Local authorities are being encouraged to take a more supportive approach and treat rooftop solar as essential infrastructure.
Government and industry bodies are also actively targeting organisations with big areas of unused roof space. These sites offer some of the quickest and cleanest opportunities to grow the UK’s renewable capacity, with energy security still high on the agenda, commercial roofs are now seen as a strategic asset.
At East Green Energy, we are already seeing this shift play out. Businesses want fast installation, predictable savings and minimal disruption, large roofs deliver all of that. With planning becoming simpler and councils working to new guidance, the path from first enquiry to installation is getting shorter.
If your business has unused roof space, now is the time to turn it into long term energy resilience. We can assess your site, model the generation potential and guide you through the new planning landscape.
